The technology of producing isobutene by MTBE cracking is a comprehensive utilization project of cracking C4 and oil refining C4. Isobutylene is an important raw material for producing fine chemical products, such as butyl rubber, polyisobutylene and other high molecular polymers, methyl methacrylate, antioxidant and adhesive. In 1981, Yanshan branch, BRICI began to produce isobutene by MTBE cracking, and this technology of MTBE cracking to isobutene was industrialized in 1992.
This technology is environment-friendly and possesses merits like: high product purity and selectivity, its product can be directly used to produce butyl rubber.
Technology of 35 kt/a MTBE cracking to polymerization grade isobutylene won the first prize of the science and technology progress award of SINOPEC in 2002,and won the first prize of the science and technology progress award of China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation in 2003.
